Rulings

Official rulings from Wizards of the Coast (14).

  • 2025-10-02Mana from firebending abilities isn't lost until you leave combat and go to your second main phase. It can be used at any time during combat, even after combat damage has been dealt.
  • 2025-10-02Exhaust abilities can be activated any time you could normally activate an ability.
  • 2025-10-02You can't choose to pay any additional costs for a copied spell. However, effects based on any additional costs that were paid for the original spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy too.
  • 2025-10-02Any other mana you add during combat will still be lost as normal when moving between steps of combat.
  • 2025-10-02The copy is created on the stack, so it's not "cast." Abilities that trigger when a player casts a spell won't trigger.
  • 2025-10-02If an exhaust ability of a permanent is activated, and then that permanent leaves the battlefield and returns to the battlefield, it becomes a new object so its exhaust ability can be activated again.
  • 2025-10-02If the spell that's copied has an X whose value was determined as it was cast, the copy has the same value of X.
  • 2025-10-02The copy will have the same targets as the spell it's copying unless you choose new ones. You may change any number of the targets, including all of them or none of them. If, for one of the targets, you can't choose a new legal target, then it remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).
  • 2025-10-02"Firebending N" is a keyword that represents the ability "Whenever this creature attacks, add N {R}. Until end of combat, you don't lose this mana as steps end."
  • 2025-10-02If an ability triggers whenever you activate an exhaust ability, that ability resolves before the exhaust ability resolves.
  • 2025-10-02The trigger from Jeong Jeong's exhaust ability and the copy it creates both resolve before the spell that caused the ability to trigger. They resolve even if the spell is countered before the copy is created.
  • 2025-10-02Any choices made when the spell resolves won't have been made yet when it's copied. Any such choices will be made separately when the copy resolves.
  • 2025-10-02Firebending abilities aren't mana abilities. They use the stack and can be responded to.
  • 2025-10-02Multiple instances of firebending on the same creature trigger separately, each granting you the appropriate amount of mana.
